This is a very good quality wooden puzzle…it would take quite a bit of chewing, throwing, and jumping up and down on to break it. (Ours is still in good condition.)
As far as the “random” choo-choo’s go – the sound is light activated; when the lights go out (as in, when all the puzzle pieces are put into place), it makes a choo-choo sound.
The only criticism for this is that the “recommended age” could probably be lowered to 2 or 2.5 years old. Our 3 year old loses interest quite quickly, and he loves trains (and liked simple puzzles like this about 6-12 months ago.) He still enjoys the CHOOOOCHOOOO sound of this puzzle, though.

We started using this when he was 18 months old, and are still using it as he nears four.
The strength of this book is in the simplicity of the activities and the ability to use items you have on hand. We never tire of the grocery bag kite. With little attention spans, you don’t want to spend a lot of time on prep. It’s not a fancy laid out book. The type is large, and the explanations short.
Then there are activities that require some initial purchases of stuff like clear contact paper. (At the beginning of the book she has two lists, one for common household items, and one for craft items). Just to be different, I spent several weeks making a particular fabric matching game, a minute here, a minute there…in the end, we didn’t play it much.
Some weaknesses were the index, based on title of activity, not necessarily the items used. The craft and kitchen chapters were little used, since I had an active boy, and a food-allergic one at that.

I’m an aunt to several young kids, and I’ve learned the value of putting together a toybox of my own to keep them entertained when they come to visit. I liked the wide age range on this toy, also that it didn’t make noise and was not messy : ) I gave it to my 3-year-old niece last time she was here. At first she was confused by it and declared loudly that she “did not know how to play with this toy,” but once we showed her, she REALLY took to it. She would play with it one way, then put it aside and then back to it an hour later. She took it to all the adults and asked them to “help her play with it” – and it’s so versatile, we could all do something different, like show her how the clock hands moved around and talk about all the different things she did during the day and at what time, etc. She had just turned 3, so she was kind of the minimum age for this toy, but obviously still very relevant. It also encouraged quiet, thoughtful play and engaging with us adults, something we all really appreciated.

When we first got this, my 2+ year old son was intrigued but scared. The former feeling prevailed and within 2 days, he was playing with it endlessly. We’ve had the toy now for 8 months and my son still comes back to it for a few minutes almost every day. He shows it off to all visitors and all the boys (up to age 6) want to check it out. It seems quite life like in terms of it’s stomping walk and roar. My husband likes to show others how it sneezes (not sure if that’s what it’s really doing but it seems like it). It’s obviously a slow moving creature so you’ll find my son either on his stomach making the dinosaur do it’s stuff or standing next to it stomping along. Very durable.

I got this table and chair set for my 3 and 1 year old. PERFECT! Very durable material. Easy and quick to put together. The hubby wasn’t home yet so I had to attempt to do it myself. Takes about 2 minutes per chair to assemble. The table assembles pretty quickly, too. About 10 minutes to put it together. I didn’t have a power drill available so I had to put the screws in manually but still, it wasn’t bad. My girls love it. Doesn’t handle the typical markings that happen when you have children this young. I tried dish liquid, pine sol and I scrubbed and scrubbed. I saw another reviewer say that a Magic erase works on it so I’ll try that.
For the price (and even if it was slightly higher priced), this was a great buy!
